Is childcare volunteering in Nepal with a group right for me?
If you love travel and working with children, and you want to use your time and energy to give back, this is the project for you. It’s one of our Team Trips, where we run a project on fixed dates so individuals from around the world can come together to form a group. Best of all, you’ll become part of our ongoing efforts to support children in need by working hand-in-hand with a group of people. This will help you accomplish so much more in the short time you’ll be in Nepal.
Our Care & Community Team Trip in Nepal runs over fixed dates at different times throughout the year. Once you arrive at the airport, everything onwards is planned for you. Your group will have a full schedule of volunteer work, evening activities, and an exciting weekend trip.
You don’t need previous experience to join. Your main role will be to support the work of local teachers and caregivers, and you’ll have Projects Abroad staff with you at all times.
Not only will you be working with a group to make a difference, but you’ll also gain practical childcare experience for your CV. This can help your future career, and give you interesting points to talk about in applications and interviews.
What will I be doing?
Your group will support staff and children at schools and care centres, and do renovation and maintenance work at these placements. Here are a few of the things you can expect to do:
- Support local teachers by organising and running fun, educational activities
- Assist with the improvement and maintenance of schools and care centres
- Encourage children to practice good personal hygiene every day
- Participate in social activities and explore Nepal with your group
Your work can be split into three main categories:
Promote early childhood development through fun, educational activities
Your group will spend a lot of time with children at care centres and schools. You’ll support local staff by planning and running educational activities that help children learn important early childhood skills. For example, you can play a ball game to help children develop their hand-eye coordination.
You’ll also help teach basic English, and improve literacy through activities like reading stories. This works out really well with a group of volunteers. Each group member can take a small group of children to practice reading or English vocabulary. This helps give each child more focused attention.
Encourage children to practice good hygiene
It is important for children to practice good hygiene everyday, to help keep them healthy. Throughout your stay, you’ll encourage the children to wash their hands regularly and brush their teeth properly. This helps reduce infection and the spread of disease. Try to make hygiene fun by using games and songs in order to encourage them! You can also brainstorm ideas for activities with your group.
Assist with manual maintenance work
You will spend some of your time doing maintenance work with your team. Your work will depend on the needs of the placement at the time, but will most likely include tasks such as painting or building.
With limited funds, maintenance work is often left undone. If your group can come in and finish the project, it will go a long way with helping to improve the children’s learning environments. Working together as a team, you’ll be able to do a lot in the short time you’re in Nepal.
Experience Nepal
When you’re not working, you will be able to experience and explore Nepal with your group and Projects Abroad staff. You’ll get the opportunity to visit nearby attractions and witness the beauty of surrounding areas, and we’ll also give you a Nepali language class. Over the weekend, we’ll take you to Pokhara and you’ll visit Swayambhu Monkey Temple.
Where will I be working?
Kathmandu
Your group will work at schools and children’s care centres in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Most of the children at these centres come from underprivileged backgrounds. Furthermore, the centres have limited funding and resources. Staff are in need of helping hands, and the facilities need maintenance.
Kathmandu is a vibrant and somewhat chaotic city. It’s home to stunning architecture, fascinating sights, and friendly people. Positioned at the foot of the renowned Himalayan mountains, Kathmandu is often called the ‘gateway to the Himalayas’ and it attracts thousands of climbers as well as tourists. This is the ideal place to get to know Nepal and its people!
What are the aims and impact of this project?
The aim of this project is to bring a group of people together to help meet the needs of underprivileged schools and childcare centres in Nepal.
In Nepal, limited funds and resources make teaching large numbers of children and maintaining buildings extremely difficult. This is why we bring volunteers like you to Nepal.
With your help, we’re able to create better learning environments for the children, and support their learning and development. You’ll also help us move closer toward achieving goals like improving literacy and English, and raising hygiene levels. And the renovation work you do helps improve the children’s learning environments.
Join us on a Childcare & Community Work Team Trip in Nepal and help local children by supporting the efforts of local teachers and caregivers.
Management plans
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.
Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.
Measuring our impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
Food and accommodation
You'll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad volunteers and interns during your stay in the Kathmandu Valley. This is a great way to get to know your fellow volunteers and interns, share experiences, and explore your surroundings in your free time together.
The accommodation is safe, clean, and comfortable. Your programme fees include three meals a day.
